UFC bantamweight fighter Demetrious ‘Mighty Mouse’ Johnson may only stand 5ft 3″ tall, but he’s proven many times in both the WEC and most recently the UFC that he’s as tough as they come.
Never has that statement proven to be more accurate than on Saturday night when he defeated former champion Miguel Torres at UFC 130 despite the fact it’s now emerged that he broke his leg halfway through the fight.
According to Johnson the injury occured in the second round of the fight.
“Once I kicked him and he checked it, I stepped back and heard crunch, crunch, crunch. I figured it might be broke,” Johnson tells MMAJunkie.
Remarkably the aptly nicknamed ‘Mighty Mouse’ was able to soldier on for a further round a half before finally securing a unanimous decision victory.
In fact the 10-1 fighter didn’t eventually discover the extent of the damage until days later when his leg started to swell up drastically. A visit to the doctor then confirmed the damage.
“The leg is broken. The fibula bone is completely fractured,” Johnson says.
So Johnson now faces a six to eight week lay-off, but he’s eager to get back into the Octagon as soon as he can.
“(If) you ain’t fighting, you ain’t making money,” says the 24 year-old who, despite being one of the top talents at 135lbs at this moment in time, still has a day job as a utility man for the Caraustar Recycling Plant in Washington State.
