Two Brazilian’s battled in Boston this evening and it was Demian Maia who came out on top as he returned to his roots.
Maia took Mario Miranda down with surprising ease early in the round and showed his BJJ credentials by methodically manufacturing his way onto Miranda’s back. Though Miranda was eventually able to shake him off and get back to his feet Maia had done enough to secure the round.
The second round was similar with Maia again gaining top position and demonstrating his mastery of jiu-jitsu to work his way into the mount and was close to finishing towards the end of the round with an armbar before Miranda finally broke free.
Maia’s jiu-jitsu clinic continued in the final round though both men were now showing clear signs of fatigue. Gaining mount in the closing stages Miranda showed his BJJ skills by escaping from a potentially fight ending armbar to survive intact until the final bell.
There was no doubt who won the contest though and with it Maia extends his career record to 13-2 and keeps himself in the mix at 185lbs, while Miranda moves to 12-2.
