Donald Cerrone proved to have far too much for Vagner Rocha as he laid seige to his leg with kicks in a one-sided bout to launch the main card at UFC 131.
Round one undoubtedly belonged to Cerrone as he imposed his superior stand-up skills on Rocha, making particularly good use of leg kicks throughout the five minute spell.
Rocha was looking to take the fight to the ground, but was only successful on one occasion, and Cerrone was quickly back to his feet which must have been disheartening for the BJJ specialist.
Cerrone continues to chip away at Rocha’s lead leg in the second and it’s taking an obvious toll on his opponent who’s struggling to put weight on it by the end of the round.
Clearly outmatched in the stand-up Rocha desperately tries to get Cerrone down, but the vastly experienced fighter is well aware of this and is able to shrug off the attempts with relative ease.
Onto the last round and Rocha is just trying to survive as Cerrone continues to blast his leg. Rocha somehow manages to hang in there, even as ‘Cowboy’ turns up the heat in the closing minute by launching more offense in the form of punches and knees along with one last hard leg kick for good measure.
Cerrone is disappointed not to have finished his opponent, but there’s no doubt he completely outmatched Rocha and easily takes a clean sweep on the judges scorecards (30-27 x2, 30-26).
Rocha was a late replacement which explains the one-sided nature of this contest, and hopefully after winning his first two fights in the UFC Cerrone will now get a step up in competition next time out.
