After unexpectedly pulling a majority draw from the jaws of defeat against Jon Fitch last night at UFC 127, an emotional BJ Penn spoke with Ariel Helwani about both the fight and his future.
On how he”s feeling after the fight:
“Physically I’m just tired, I feel like I’ve been doing a bunch of circuit training, you know lifting a bunch of different weights and stuff…but mentally, emotionally, I’m kind of bummed out the way it all went down.”
On The Majority Draw Decision:
“Honestly, the more we think about it, we really did have two good first and second rounds, I’m just really bummed out that I gave away the third round.”
On Whether the last round should have been 10-8 to Fitch:
“Honestly, I don’t think that I was in a position of being finished, but I guess I’m just dissappointed, kind of like how Rampage when he fought Lyoto, I guess I was just kind of in the same mindset…and 10-8, I guess it just depends what you’re looking at.”
On His Takedowns In The Fight:
“Yeah, that’s something I’m going to add to my style from now on. I don’t like constantly just trying to punch a guy and run away from him. It looks bad on the judges eyes, it doesn’t get the job done, and if their gameplan is to stay away from your big punch then it’s going to be very hard to knock him out that way.”
On His Thoughts On Retirement If He Had Lost The Fight:
“I don’t know, everything runs through your head at certain times, and your mind changes from time to time. I still don’t know what I’m going to do.”
On Whether He Still Has The Fire To Compete:
“I know I have the skill, I know I have a lot of things, I know I have the fire. Some mornings I wake up and I wanna just kill everybody, but sometimes you think about your daughter and different things, so a bunch of things run through your head from time to time.”
On continuing to fight at 170lbs:
“Yeah, that’s fine, that’s fine. I don’t know if Dana wants me to fight Fitch or what he wants to do, but I haven’t made up my mind any other way.”
On Whether He Would Be Interested In A Fitch Rematch?
“You know, that probably would make the most sense for me to wanna motivate me to come back and fight again.”
