At last night’s Strikeforce: Fedor Vs Werdum event, female middleweight champion Cris ‘Cyborg’ Santos once again demonstrated why she’s seen as an unstoppable force in woman’s mixed martial arts.
Nobody had given her opponent Jan Finney much of a chance heading into this contest, but she showed remarkable heart and a in impressive chin in the contest.
Cyborg showed no mercy though and threw everything but the kitchen sink at her for two rounds until the referee was forced to step in to save Finney from the brutal beating she was receiving.
After another dominating performance in the cage we’re left to wonder who can possibly provide a realistic challenge for her?
At the post-fight press conference Scott Coker stated that they are trying to put a fight together with former boxer Erin Toughill.
Right now that is certainly their best option, and could provide Cyborg with her stiffest test so far. Toughill has a record of 10-2-1 and like Cyborg she also has wins over Finney and Marloes Coenen on her record. Technically she should be a better opponent for the Brazilian in the stand-up department.
The only issue is that Toughill has a somewhat fiery, outspoken personality and she and Strikeforce have been at loggerheads for some time over a number of issues.
At one stage Toughill threatened to leave the promotion entirely, but there now appears to currently be a truce between the two parties. Having failed at least twice in the past year to get her into the Strikeforce cage however, there’s not yet a cast-iron guarantee that they will be successful in doing so this time round.
