It’s been a long time coming, but we can today finally confirm that Fedor Emelianenko’s next fight will be against Fabricio Werdum.
Strikeforce announced the Russian stars return as the headline bout of an upcoming event to be held on June 26th in San Jose, California.
Fedor’s future with the Strikeforce promotion had been in doubt for several months after his management M-1 Global looked to re-open contract negotiations with the company just one fight into their current deal, with issues regarding their co-promotion deal believed to be at the root of the problem.
Talks progressed slowly, keeping Fedor out of the second CBS aired event in Nashville, but at last it seems the two sides have come to an agreement, and MMA fans can once again look forward to seeing one of the world’s pound-for-pound best fighters back in the cage.
As for his opponent, it’s no surprise that it’s Fabricio Werdum. As we reported back in November it was always likely to be the Brazilian, despite it not the match-up many were hoping to see.
For Strikeforce execs it will just be a relief to see Fedor back in the fold though, giving them the opportunity to put the turmoil of the contract talks, the riot at Strikeforce Nashville, and the disappointing CBS ratings behind them and look to the future.
