Like Conor Mcgregor, boxing superstar Floyd Mayweather Jr has a knack of keeping himself in the headlines, and so last night at the Canelo Vs Khan event in Las Vegas he seemed happy to entertain the recent rumors of a fight between the two.

“It’s possible,” Mayweather said with a smile when asked about the rumor. “You know, it’s possible. [McGregor] was a name that was shot at me. The rumors that you’ve all been hearing, I started. So, it may not be a rumor. You know, keep your fingers crossed. It may be a boxing Vs MMA fighter. we just don’t know.”

A day earlier Mayweather’s father had also indicated that the rumors were true.

“He had told me the other day that he’s going to take another fight,” Mayweather Sr. told ESNews. “He told me it’s (against) some kind of MMA fighter.”

Mayweather Sr. also confirmed that it would be a boxing fight and added that, “Pretty sure it’s gonna come around real soon. Won’t be that long.”

From the sounds of things, Mayweather Jr. is happy to keep this rumor going, even though there’s virtually no chance of it actually happening.

Any publicity is good publicity, and he may welcome being talked about in connection with mixed martial arts given that he’s recently talked about the idea of promoting MMA fights.

However, the fact remains that McGregor is still under contract with the UFC, and there’s no way that they are going to let him compete outside of the Octagon in a boxing fight with the undefeated Mayweather.

Nevertheless, it does show the star power that McGregor currently possesses that both Amir Khan and now Mayweather Jr have shown an interest in fighting him in recent days, and he may look to leverage that notoriety as he continues his apparent power struggle with the UFC going forward.
