BJJ specialist Vinny Magalhaes, a former Ultimate Fighter Season 8 and UFC competitor, was today unveiled as the M-1 Global promotion’s latest signing.

The 26 year-old has comitted to a six-fight deal with the Russian promotion as he attempts to fulfill his potential as a mixed martial artist.

“I’m excited to get into the ring as soon as possible. Thank you to M-1 Global for providing me this great opportunity,” Magalhaes stated in a press release to announce the signing.

A 2nd degree black belt and three time world champion in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Magalhaes showed his ground skills on TUF 8 by making his way to the final of the show, tapping Krzysztof Sozsynski amongst others along the way. He came undone in the final however, being KO’d in the first round by Ryan Bader.

A decision loss to Eliot Marshall followed before he was released by the promotion in April of 2009. Since then the Brazilian has gone 3-1, including a submission victory at M-1 Global Challenge 22 this past December.

Though his overall MMA record is less than impressive at 5-5 (1), there’s a feeling that Magalhaes has not yet shown the best of his abilities, and M-1 Global feel they have signed a diamond in the rough here.

“M-1 Global is looking to expand its roster with fighters who are at the top of their game and Vinny is by far one of the best submission experts on the planet. The skills he possesses are unparalleled,” said Evgeni Kogan, Director of Operations for M-1 Global. “With the growth that M-1 Global is going through, extending a long-term contract to Magalhaes is the right thing to do for us a promotion. We have expectations that Vinny will become one of the greatest fighters in the world and are proud to have him on board.”
