As we reported yesterday, MMA stars like Chael Sonnen, Vitor Belfort, Georges St.Pierre and Randy Couture have all stated their desire to fight middleweight champion Anderson Silva after his performance at UFC 112 on Saturday night.
Now former heavyweight champion Frank Mir has also thrown his hat in the ring.
“I would love to fight Anderson Silva!” Mir informed the Fighters Only site via text message. “I would even make it a 235 catch weight to make it more appealing to his manager and the commission.”
In fact it was actually Silva who first floated the idea of fighting Mir, as SI.com reporter Josh Gross reported in August of last year. More recently the fighter has confirmed that he wants to take on big fights no matter what the division, whether it be moving down to welterweight, or up to heavyweight.
Meanwhile Mir is currently getting over a convincing loss to Shane Carwin for the interim UFC heavyweight title, and a win over Silva would undoubtedly be a sure-fire way for the former champ to put himself right back into the spotlight in the division.
It remains to be seen whether the UFC are receptive to the idea though, even with Mir’s offer to move down to 235lbs for the bout. Dana White has stated in the past that he likes the idea of fighters cleaning out a division and then moving on to the next one.
That would suggest that either a move down to welterweight, or a move up to light-heavyweight is the more likely option for the Brazilian.
