What comes next for former lightweight champion Frankie Edgar in the UFC after a decision loss to Ben Henderson remains a mystery today as all the parties concerned appear to be pulling in different directions.
Yesterday Edgar made an appearance on The MMA Hour show with Ariel Helwani where he made it clear he has no interest in entertaining the idea of moving down to the featherweight division.
“I’m saying it, and I’m saying it loud: I want my rematch,” Edgar categorically stated.
Normally mild-mannered and considered a “company guy”, on this occasion ‘The Answer’ was in no mood to bow down to others demands and stated his belief that he’s more than earned the right to a second shot at Henderson.
“I’m not going to have these antics or play these games. I’m telling you want I want. This is what I want. I think it’s fair. I think the fans want to see it. It was fight of the night. Listen, even if these guys want to see me get beat up, I do get beat up in a lot of my fights, even in the fights I win, so it’s win-win for everybody.”
Nevertheless, while UFC president Dana White sympathises with his position he is continuing to bang the drum for Edgar to drop down to 145lbs where many believe his slight frame is better suited.
“I feel like Frankie Edgar absolutely deserves a rematch, seeing as how every time this guy has fought, he’s given everyone else a rematch,” White told the media at yesterday’s UFC On FX 2 pre-fight presser. “Yet, I don’t want him to fight at 155 pounds, I want him to go to 145 and fight for that title. And if we do give him a rematch, it clogs up [the division]. there are other guys that are in line waiting and it’s just a big mess.”
It’ll be interesting to see whether White is able to convince Edgar to drop down. I doubt it, and if he does stick at 155lbs then I believe the best solution would be to let henderson fight the winner of ‘UFC On FOX 3’ headliner Nate Diaz Vs Jim Miller, and let Edgar fight Anthony Pettis to establish the next No.1 contender.
