Ask and you shall receive. A week after former lightweight champion Frankie Edgar made it clear he had no interest in moving to featherweight and wanted an immediate rematch with Ben Henderson the UFC has finally granted his wish.
“Frankie Edgar and Ben Henderson rematch will be this summer,” Dana White confirmed on Twitter while Edgar also wrote, “Rematch anyone??…….it’s on!! Thanks to @danawhite @lorenzofertitta. Me and Henderson 2. Here we go!!”
It’s interesting how this has come about as even as early as this morning at the UFC On FOX 3 press conference White had stated that the headline feature of that show, Nate Diaz Vs Jim Miller would establish the next No.1 contender.
White had also indicated at the presser that he still harbored a hope that he could persuade Edgar to move down to 145lbs, but apparently there’s been discussions behind the scenes since then and ‘The Answer’ has convinced him to give him another chance to regain his title.
In fairness it’s hard to turn down Edgar’s request given that he himself had agreed to immediate rematches with both BJ Penn and Gray Maynard while he was champion due to the close nature of their fights, and his clash with Henderson was certainly close enough to leave an element of doubt regarding the decision.
The fight was also very entertaining to watch, so there’s likely to be few complaints from fans about having to watch them go at it again sometime in the summer months ahead.
