Recently a lightweight title rematch between Ben Henderson and Frankie Edgar was targeted for UFC 150 in August, but according to one of the fighters involved that’s no longer the case.
Speaking to Ariel Helwani after taking in the UFC On FOX 3 show in his native New Jersey, Edgar revealed that an old injury meant he wouldn’t be ready in time to fight on August 11th.
“I had some issues with my nose, and my nose obviously breaks pretty frequently in these last couple of fights,” Edgar says with a wry smile. “So, I’m going to need to give it some time to heal properly so I can get back to sparring.”
The good news is that it doesn’t seem as if the fight will be pushed back to much further in the UFC’s busy schedule.
“I don’t have a definite date, but probably September,” he said.
Normally this wouldn’t be too big an issue, but it is unfortunate since the UFC would have been hoping to get a title fight on a historic event like UFC 150. With this lightweight option ruled out that looks to be pretty much impossible now though with other division’s champions already set to fight on other cards, so it’ll be interesting to see what the promotion is able to rustle up as an alternative to generate interest in the card.
