Former Strikeforce 205lb champion Gegard Mousasi’s opponent for his next fight in December has now been confirmed.
Mousasi will face up and coming Strikeforce star Ovince St.Preux at the promotion’s final event of the year which is headlined by a lightweight title fight between Gilbert Melendez and Jorge Masvidal.
St.Preux is currently on an eight fight winning streak, with a number of them being notched up in the Strikeforce Challengers series, but this is clearly a big step up in competition for him, and a chance to prove that he is the real deal.
The news emerges at an important juncture for the Strikeforce 205lb division as current champion Dan Henderson has just departed for an exclusive deal with the UFC so the belt is now vacant.
Mousasi is one of the fighters who could have been considered to fight for that title, but now he’ll have to get past St.Preux first before getting a chance to get his hands on the belt again.
That would appear to leave two other former champions, Muhammed ‘King Mo’ Lawal and Rafael ‘Feijao’ Cavalcante, as the fighters currently in pole position to fight for the vacant title, though as yet a rematch between the two has not been confirmed.
