Controversial heavyweight striker Gilbert Yvel has confirmed that he has signed a seven fight deal with the UFC. His first fight is a little over two weeks away when he will step in at short notice for the injured Gabe Gonzaga against Junior Dos Santos at UFC 108.
Yvel told MMAweekly that he sees Dos Santos as a great opponent to mark his arrival in the sport leading promotion.
“He beat Werdum, he beat Cro Cop, and after I beat him, I take his place in the rankings, so that’s a good thing.”
He is also hopeful that the Brazilian, who is currently 9-1 in his MMA career, will engage him in his favored aspect of the sport.
“I’m lucky this time, because he might want to stand up with me.”
That’s certainly been the case in recent fights with Dos Santos choosing to stand and trade blows rather than revealing what is believed to be a strong jiu jitsu game. It’s proven successful so far for him, with his first three fights in the UFC ending in victory by either KO or TKO.
Yvel is a far more experienced striker however, and with 31 of his wins coming by way of knockout, he possesses the power to potentially derail the Dos Santos hype train.
Despite being a veteran, Yvel revealed that he is nervous ahead of his debut bout for the biggest promotion in the sport. At the same time, he is already dreaming of winning the heavyweight title.
“I love to have belts; the biggest UFC belt, all gold and big and heavy, ah!”
