Mystery still surrounds female MMA superstar Gina Carano’s recent withdrawal from her fight at this weekend’s Strikeforce: Overeem Vs Werdum event, with the only details currently having been disclosed stating that the decision came from her doctor.
While we don’t know when she may be able to return to the cage, what we do know is that Carano had been expected to be heavily involved in the promotion of her upcoming movie ‘Haywire’ which hits the big screen in August, and in a new interview with the Blackbook site she talks about how the acting gig came about.
“I had a black eye, and I didn’t want to see anyone,” Carano recalls of her first meeting with director Steven Soderbergh, who’s previous movies include ‘Traffic’, ‘Erin Brockovich’ and ‘Oceans Eleven’. “Especially not a director who, I’m embarrassed to say, I hadn’t heard of before.
“He wanted to make a movie based on a female action person—‘star’ feels too weird to say—who would make these Hollywood stage fights look believable.”
That made Carano, who has both the fighting experience and the movie-star looks to front a Hollywood movie, the perfect choice.
Carano goes on to talk about her experience on the set of her first big acting role where she stood opposite a host of big names from the silver screen like Ewan McGregor, Antonio Banderas and Michael Douglas.
“When I’m training for a fight, I beat myself up all day long. Filming a movie was draining in such a different way. Every day I woke up and was on some sort of adrenaline rush—I always felt high.”
During this time Carano fell completely off the radar as far as the mixed martial arts scene goes, leading to speculation that she may have left the sport that made her famous behind, but while new doors were clearly opening up for her career wise, when the movie was finally in the can she rediscovered her passion for fighting.
“I got home after this incredible, life-changing experience, and had to think about who I was. I knew I had to go back to fighting.”
Though it only just came out, the interview appears to have been given before the unfortunate news that she had to pull out of her fight with Sarah D’Alelio. Of course as and when we find out more details on the exact nature of her condition and when she’s likely to return you’ll hear about it on this site.
