Gina Carano announced recently that she would be returning to fight in the Strikeforce cage in 2011, and the word earlier today was that an opponent had been set for her.

According to Brazilian site TATAME, Carano was in talks to fight up and coming star Amanda Nunes.

However Strikeforce matchmaker Shannon Knapp shot down the rumor, stating, “we have something else in mind.”

That’s probably for the best. Nunes is a hard-hitting striker and recovered from a loss in her pro-debut back in 2008 to string together six straight victories, all by either KO or TKO.

She made her Strikeforce debut in January, and took just 14 seconds to knock-out another promising up-and-comer Julia Budd, who is notable for having defeated Carano in a muay thai match a few years ago.

With that in mind this would have been no easy return to action for the 28 year-old Carano, particularly after an almost two year layoff since losing to Cris ‘Cyborg’ Santos.

At this stage it’s not known who Strikeforce have in mind as an alternative, but Carano’s return is believed to be on course for the second leg of Strikeforce’s Heavyweight GP quarter-finals on June 18th in Texas.
