In the lightweight showdown to decided who would secure a shot against the winner of Penn Vs Edgar at UFC 118 Gray Maynard managed to grind out the win over Kenny Florian.
Both men started off the first round cautiously, but Florian started to gained a slight advantage in the stand-up before Maynard evened things up by scoring a takedown late in the round.
The second played out in much the same way with both men staying overly cautious on the feet, though a rare punch from Maynard opened up a cut above Florian’s eye before he again secured a takedown against the fence and rode out the rest of the round.
In the third Florian picked up the pace a little on the feet, but not enough to threaten Maynard who again found himself on top midway through the round. With time running out Florian threw up a couple of omaplata attempts, but ‘The Bully’ shrugged them off and made it to the end of the round.
With this victory Maynard has now gone seven fights without finishing inside the distance, but the cumalative effect of those wins, taking his career record to 10-0 (1nc), finally earns him a shot at the title.
As for Florian, this was a frustrating fight in front of his hometown fans that sees him pick up the fifth loss of his career, and on reflection he may feel that once again in a major bout he failed to live up to his full potential.
