It’s with great sadness that we have to report that the world renowned MMA coach Shawn Tompkins has died.

The 37 year-old’s passing was first revealed by MMA personality Mike Straka on Twitter and quickly confirmed by numerous other sources.

Though an official cause of death is as yet unknown it is believed that an autopsy is pending.

Tompkins Facebook page gave little indication that anything was wrong and seemed in good spirits. On Friday he posted that he was, “So happy it is Friday, gonna have a great weekend….”, and on Saturday wrote, “House to myself, BBQ, Pool and Im still bored. Las Vegas what have you done to me??????” before conversing with other posters on the site.

According to MMAjunkie MMA fighter John Gunderson stated that Tompkins “didn’t wake up” this morning, though it was not yet known why.

Tompkins had been a familiar face in the MMA scene for years, at one stage working as head trainer for X-Treme Couture and later at the TapouT Training Center, and has worked with a number of UFC stars like Vitor Belfort, Wanderlei Silva and his brother-in-law Sam Stout amongst many others. He also appeared in the ‘UFC Undisputed 2010’ video game.

Highly regarded as both a coach and as a person, Tompkins will undoubtedly be sorely missed by all who knew him.
