Boxing star turned MMA fighter Holly Holm’s stock rose once again last night as she claimed another highlight reel finish against Julia Werner to become Legacy FC’s inaugural woman’s bantamweight champion.
Werner, who had been on a five fight winning streak prior to this fight, was never really at the races hear with Holm’s slick, technical combinations of punches and kicks together with a notable size advantage being too much for her too handle.
If nothing else Werner showed herself to be tough though, eating a few head kicks amongst an assortment of other strikes in the first four rounds.
Holm’s conditioning was excellent and she seemed as fresh in the fifth round as she was in the first, continuing to pressure her opponent with superior offense, and that paid off when a right hook blended seemlessly into a left head kick that landed flush to Werner’s face and toppled her to the canvas.
Holm immediately followed her to the ground and landed a few punches to seal a TKO victory at 1.50mins in the fifth round.
Impressive stuff again from Holm who remains unbeaten in seven professional MMA fights, including six stoppage victories.
Questions still remain unanswered about Holm’s ground game, but there’s absolutely no doubt she’s a first class striker, who’s stellar 32-2-3 boxing record tells only part of the story as in many ways it’s actually her effortless arsenal of kicks that has proven to be her most dangerous weapon so far.
The victory will once again generate interest in seeing Holm fight in the UFC, but it remains to be seen whether a deal can be struck as tentative talks with her manager following a UFC event recently quickly stalled when it came time to talk about the financial details.
So much so in fact that days later UFC president Dana White said he was no longer interested in signing Holm, but it’s believed there’s a good chance those talks could be revisited again in the near future.
However, there’s also been talk that Holm could fight Cris ‘Cyborg’ instead in a pay-per-view event outside of the UFC and that was something that Holm expressed an interest in after last night’s victory.
