Jake Ellenberger’s wrestling prowess proved to be too much for a game John ‘Doomsday’ Howard at tonight’s UFC On Versus event.
Ellenberger showed excellent takedowns throughout the contest, set up nicely by his striking. In the first round he did little more than stifle Howard, but in the second round he stepped things up with some vicious elbows, once of which appeared to instantly produce significant swelling around his opponents left eye.
On the occasions where Howard was able to keep the fight standing his power punches appeared to trouble Ellenberger, but when in doubt the wrestler immediately reverted back to his roots giving ‘Doomsday’ little chance to capitalize.
By the third round the swelling on Howard’s eye was grotesque, and with yet more ground and pound being applied to that spot referee Howard Dean stepped in to ask the doctor to take another look at the damage. Unsurprisingly with Howard’s eye being completely shut and swollen the fight was then brought to a halt.
It’s a good win for Ellenberger who impressed with his strong takedowns and damaging strikes even from inside his opponents guard. He’s not always going to be a crowd-pleaser, but he’s going to continue to pose a lot of problems for the rest of the 170lb division.
As for Howard the loss brings an end to his three fight winning streak in the octagon, and from the extent of the swelling around his eye he may be facing a significant layoff with an orbital fracture.
