Jake Ellenberger demolished former No.1 welterweight contender Jake Shields tonight in the main event of UFC Fight Night 25.
In the early stages Ellenberger showed his strength by simply shrugging off Shields takedown attempts, and that was a major worry for the former Strikeforce champion.
Ellenberger then took the fight to Shields, getting him in the muay thai clinch and launched two knees, one to the stomach and one to the head.
The latter dropped Shields down onto his knees and Ellenberger showed him no mercy, immediately unleashing a barrage of left hands to the head that forced the referee to rush in and call an end to the contest.
A still dazed and confused Shields didn’t even realize the fight had been stopped and continued to try to grapple with the referee before regaining his senses.
This was a huge win for Ellenberger who now extends his winning run in the UFC to five fights, and with his mix of heavy hands and strong wrestling he’s putting himself on the road to title contention at 170lbs.
As for Shields, it’s tough to see him lose just weeks after his father passed away, but even taking that into consideration he’s once again failed to shine in the Octagon and has to regroup quickly and find away to arrest his slide down the welterweight rankings.
