In the co-main event of Saturday Nights Strikeforce: Fedor Vs Rogers card, the vacant middleweight championship belt will be placed around the waist of either Jake Shields or Jason ‘Mayhem’ Miller.
At the open workout ahead of the event both fighters took time out to speak to the media about their upcoming bout.
Jake Shields is clearly entering into this title fight very focused, telling mma.fanhouse that, “I’m ready, I wish I was fighting right now, tonight.”
It’s no great secret that Shields has the advantage if the fight goes to the ground, but Miller is notoriously difficult to finish from that position. This is not something that appears to trouble Shields however.
“I have every intention of finishing him. I think he’s going to be in for a big surprise.”
Mayhem Miller has stated previously that he wants to keep the fight standing, but with 13 of his 22 victories coming via submission he is also keen to remind people of his ground skills.
“I know a few tricks of my own on the ground, so, if we get there I’m going to be able to do stuff to him as well.” he says. “I see the glaring weaknesses in his game, I’m going to do my best to exploit them.”
He also points out that the size advantage that Shields often enjoys over his opponents is unlikely to be a factor on this occasion.
“He cuts his weight real well, but now he’s fighting at 185 and I don’t think he’s going to be able to squash me like he squashes everyone else.”
