The UFC are continuing to stack their Super Bowl weekend UFC 126 event on February 5th with the latest addition to an already impressive line-up being a significant one for the welterweight division as Jon Fitch takes on Jake Ellenberger.

The bout joins other rumored match-ups like Anderson Silva Vs Vitor Belfort, Forrest Griffin Vs Rich Franklin, Jon Jones Vs Ryan Bader and Kenny Florian Vs Evan Dunham on what’s surely going to be the must-see event of the Winter 2011 MMA calendar.

Fitch had been hoping to get another shot at Georges St.Pierre after posting another five fight winning streak, but with Jake Shields stepping ahead of him in the queue he now has another obstacle to overcome to remain in the title picture.

Like Fitch and many of the other 170lb top contenders Ellenberger has used his wrestling background to his advantage in his 23-5 career to date,  though he backs that up with heavy hands which has resulted in 15 of his wins ending by some form of knockout.

So far in the octagon he’s produced two wins and a loss, with the latter seeing him drop an extremely close split decision to Carlos Condit, and a win over Fitch would be highly significant for his own climb up the welterweight ladder.

What’s most interesting to me about this match-up is that it leaves the aforementioned Condit out of the loop.  In the aftermath of his spectacular KO over Dan Hardy at UFC 120 Condit had named Shields and Fitch as names on his own personal wish-list for his next fight but they are both now otherwise engaged.

It’ll be interesting to see what other plans the UFC has for ‘The Natural Born Killer’ who’s proving to be one of the most exciting fighter’s in the division at this present moment in time.
