New UFC Light-heavyweight champion Jon Jones swift rise to superstardom will be given another boost on Thursday evening when he’s interviewed on ‘The Tonight Show With Jay Leno.’
It appears Jones caught the attention of the long-running NBC show’s producers after not only becoming the youngest ever UFC champion at the age of 23 on Saturday night, but also catching a thief in New Jersey just hours before the event took place.
“Just gotta crazy call from dana just now!” Jones wrote on twitter after first receiving news of the booking.
Dana White then revealed exactly what had Jones so excited.
“Congrats @jonnybones 1st UFC fighter to do the The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. The hits keep on coming!!!! Tune in thur on NBC!”
Actually, White has his facts wrong – Quinton ‘Rampage’ Jackson also appeared on the show in the summer of last year while promoting his ‘A-Team’ movie, but still it’s a major accomplishment for Jones to be invited on.
As I’ve said previously on this site, Jones has the looks, charisma, clean-cut persona, and fighting ability to become a major crossover star for the UFC, potentially even surpassing the likes of Georges St.Pierre in the future if he can continue on his current path.
That’s good news not only for Jones himself, but also the sport of MMA as a whole as it continues to strive for acceptance in the mainstream and grow in popularity around the world.
