In 2011 so far Jon Jones has gone 3-0, defeating a top contender in Ryan Bader, taking the title from Mauricio ‘Shogun’ Rua and then defending the belt against former champion Quinton ‘Rampage’ Jackson.
For some that would be more than enough for one year, but for Jones who lives and breathes the sport every day the prospect of fighting another major force at 205lbs in Lyoto Machida at UFC 140 in December is the perfect way to bring it to a close.
“I’m excited for the fight. To beat three UFC champions in the same year would be an absolute blessing in so many ways,” Jones tells ESPN.com.
“I’m not even sure it’s been done before. That would be cool. I’m already looking forward to that.”
Jones goes on to note that the two losses Machida has suffered so far in his career came to the two men that he himself has just defeated in Shogun and Rampage, but at the same time he instantly dismisses that as an excuse to enter into this fight with anything other than 100% focus and commitment.
“Styles make fights and I have to respect Lyoto. He went on a long tear being undefeated; he’s a tough guy.”
The champion is wise to not ignore ‘The Dragon’ who went on a 16 fight unbeaten run at the start of his career, defeating the likes of Mauricio ‘Shogun’ Rua, Rashad Evans, Tito Ortiz and Rich Franklin along the way.
Jones Vs Machida will headline UFC 140 on December 10th in Toronto, Canada.
