Jon Jones is currently terrorizing the UFC’s light-heavyweight division, man-handling everyone the UFC has thrown at him so far, but heavyweights take note, ‘Bones’ sees himself competing in their division before long.
“I just received a ton of questions asking about a possible move to heavy weight.. “I can see that happening in 2012,” Jones said on his twitter account yesterday.
That response came after the 23 year-old had revealed that, “I weighed out at 227lbs today, I think I maybe still growing into my adult frame.”
It’s not the first time Jones has suggested a move up in weight, but it’s the first time he’s put a potential date on the move. The fast-rising star certainly has the frame for such a move, standing 6ft 4″ tall and at 84.5″ possessing the longest reach of anybody currently on the UFC’s roster.
There’s also the fact that Jones comes from a family of big men.
“My little brother @chanjones99 is 6’6 260lbs and my older brother @artj97 is about 6’4 310lbs,” Jones says.
He has plenty of unfinished business at 205lbs for the time being though. Next up is a fight with Ryan Bader at UFC 126 in February. A victory there could put him in possible contention for a No.1 contenders bout in the division.
Personally I believe he should stick around at light-heavyweight for as long as he possibly can. While it’s exciting to contemplate what kind of impression he could make in the weight class above, there’s still a host of exciting fights for him right where he is, and it’s a division that he can make the best use of the height and reach advantage he enjoys.
In the longer term though there’s no reason to discount the possibility that Jones could be a future two-division champion in the UFC.
