Jon Jones Vs Alexander Gustafsson Rematch Could Be On The Cards

It’s by no means a certainty at this stage, but momentum is already building for an immediate Jon Jones Vs Alexander Gustafsson rematch after a stunning five round light-heavyweight showdown between the two lit up the Air Canada Center in Toronto last night.

In the immediate aftermath of the fight opinions were split about who won the closely fought encounter, with many fans and even several pro-fighters believing that Gustafsson had done enough to shock the world and take the title from Jones, while the judges saw it unanimously for Jones (49-48 x2, 49-46) as did the FightMetric site and several leading media outlets.

The close nature of the fight, coupled with just how wildly entertaining it was from start to finish has lead to people clamoring for more and post-fight UFC president Dana White appeared to be amongst them.

“Yeah, there’s a real good possibility we could do this again,” White admitted to Ariel Helwani on FOX Sports 1 in the aftermath of the fight. “We would give Glover (Teixeira) another fight. Literally, I hadn’t even thought about it until you just said it. I like the idea. I think that that fight was awesome. I think that this is one of those fights that people would love to see again. It would be hard for either one of the fighters not to think that they both should rematch.”

It’s unlikely anybody would turnĀ  down the chance to see another five rounds between these two evenly matched warriors again sooner rather than later. Both men need time to recover from such a brutal battle, but it’d make a great main event for the UFC’s annual superbowl weekend show in February of next year.

  1. Gustaffson took rounds 1,2,3…until the 4th Jones has no significant offense. But I will say I am of the belief that to dethrone a champ you either have to beat them to a pulp, put them to bed or make the beg for mercy.

  2. I’ll need to watch it again to get a proper feel for who won – I was too busy typing furiously on the keyboard to accurately assess who came out on top! I was anticipating some kind of split decision at the time and wouldn’t have raised a strong objection whoever had their hand raised.

One things for sure though, Gustafsson definitely did enough to warrant a rematch in my mind. He was very accurate with his punches and I couldn’t be more impressed with his ability to stuff Jones’ takedowns – it never even occured to me that was a possibility heading into this fight!

  3. Yea Jones’ wrestling being neutralized was something I don’t think anybody saw coming. Jones being taken down himself was rather mind blowing.
