It’s by no means a certainty at this stage, but momentum is already building for an immediate Jon Jones Vs Alexander Gustafsson rematch after a stunning five round light-heavyweight showdown between the two lit up the Air Canada Center in Toronto last night.
In the immediate aftermath of the fight opinions were split about who won the closely fought encounter, with many fans and even several pro-fighters believing that Gustafsson had done enough to shock the world and take the title from Jones, while the judges saw it unanimously for Jones (49-48 x2, 49-46) as did the FightMetric site and several leading media outlets.
The close nature of the fight, coupled with just how wildly entertaining it was from start to finish has lead to people clamoring for more and post-fight UFC president Dana White appeared to be amongst them.
“Yeah, there’s a real good possibility we could do this again,” White admitted to Ariel Helwani on FOX Sports 1 in the aftermath of the fight. “We would give Glover (Teixeira) another fight. Literally, I hadn’t even thought about it until you just said it. I like the idea. I think that that fight was awesome. I think that this is one of those fights that people would love to see again. It would be hard for either one of the fighters not to think that they both should rematch.”
It’s unlikely anybody would turn down the chance to see another five rounds between these two evenly matched warriors again sooner rather than later. Both men need time to recover from such a brutal battle, but it’d make a great main event for the UFC’s annual superbowl weekend show in February of next year.
