Update: A day after this rumor it came to light that Jon Jones will in fact face Lyoto Machida at UFC 140 due to Rashad Evans hand still being injured.
Big news emerged from today’s UFC 136 pre-fight press conference, with MMAfighting reporting that December 10th’s UFC 140 event is being earmarked to host an eagerly awaited light-heavyweight title fight between Jon Jones and Rashad Evans.
Though the fight has not yet been officially confirmed White hinted that it could be in the next 24 hours.
Such a quick turnaround for this fight had seemed unlikely given that Jones hurt both his feet in his recent title defense against Quinton ‘Rampage’ Jackson at UFC 135, but it appears the damage was not as severe as some had feared as Dana White revealed at the weekend that he had spoke to him since and he was now back to 100% again.
Prior to this latest announcement a heavyweight rematch between Frank Mir and Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira had been the expected main event, which had been met with a lukewarm response from fans.
If Jones Vs Evans is indeed installed as the new headliner then that will prove to be a major shot in the arm, not only for the event which goes down in Toronto, Canada, but also for the UFC’s pay-per-view numbers which have struggled at times this year to match previous years.
All the stops have been pulled out in the closing months of the year however, with last month’s Jones Vs Rampage event being the first in a flood of anticipated fights including Edgar Vs Maynard 3, Aldo Vs Florian, GSP Vs Condit, Penn Vs Diaz, Velasquez Vs Dos Santos, Shogun Vs Henderson and Lesnar Vs Overeem which should ensure that the promotion heads into 2012 on a high.
