The UFC today officially announced their second event on Versus will take place on August 1st in Salt Lake City, Utah. The event will be headlined by rising light-heavyweight star Jon Jones who takes on Belarusian veteran Vladimir Matyushenko.
22 year-old Jones is arguably the promotions brightest prospect, and easily dismantled Brandon Vera in his last octagon outing which was the main event at the UFC’s first Versus event.
Matyushenko may not be the opponent most people would like to see the young star facing next, but the 39 year-old does hold a strong career record of 24-4 and has claimed two victories in the promotion since his return in September of last year.
The UFC have also officially announced a second bout for the event, which sees one of the promotion’s most consistent performers Yushin Okami up against Mark Munoz.
Munoz is an emerging force at 185lbs with three victories in a row, with his last two coming by way of some of the most vicious ground and pound we’ve seen in quite some time.
Okami is often seen as the forgotten man of the middleweight division. With only two losses in ten trips to the octagon he should perhaps be getting more attention, and so this co-main event fight is a perfect opportunity for him to show of his skills.
The UFC’s first event on Versus, the traditional home of Zuffa’s sister promotion the WEC, took place on March 21st and drew 1.24 million viewers.
