Josh Koscheck KO’s Matt Hughes At UFC 135

Despite looking tentative in the opening stages Josh Koscheck came on strong at the end of the first round of his fight with Matt Hughes and produced a KO over the legendary fighter.

Hughes looked impressive for much of the round, showing good striking skills and mirroring some of GSP’s work against Koscheck by working a stiff jab and targeting the right eye that was damaged badly in that fight.

He was also landing some nice uppercuts and as the round progressed he was visibly growing in confidence as he appeared to be throwing Koscheck off his own game.

Unfortunately for the hall-of-famer that early dominance didn’t last. With the round looking in the bag for him he was suddenly clipped with a right hand that hurt him, and another shortly afterwards which dropped him onto his knees.

Koscheck showed no mercy and began raining down blows in the final seconds and then a final hammerfist put Hughes out cold with just a single second remaining.

There was a lot of talk from the commentary team during the fight that this was to be Hughes last fight, win or lose, but afterwards the tearful veteran stated that he wasn’t going to retire, but was going to ask the UFC to “put me on the shelf” and see what happens in the future.
