Judge Blocks Ricardo Mayorga From Fighting Din Thomas; Shine Fights Set To Ignore Ruling

In a major blow for upstart promotion Shine Fights, an injunction has been passed down preventing them from going ahead with their headline bout between Din Thomas and Ricardo Mayorga for their ‘Worlds Collide’ event tonight.

The judges ruling comes after Mayorga’s boxing promoter Don King moved to prevent his fighter from competing in MMA competition, citing a legally binding contract stating that he had exclusive rights to the fighters bout.

The court found that Mayorga is not a legitimate mixed martial artist and that Shine was not legitimately promoting him as one for this event,” Sherdog reports, “and that the only reason anyone was attending this ‘Worlds Collide’ event was to see how Mayorga faired as a boxer against an MMA fighter.”

Thomas Vs Mayorga had been the main selling point of the pay-per-view event and the boxer Vs MMA fighter angle had been successful in attracting significant interest to it in the weeks leading up to the showdown.

Shine Fights representatives say that despite the injunction the fight will still go ahead this evening, but Josh Gross clarifies this will only be the case if it they are not officially served with the court order.  Beyond that the situation remains unclear.

Update: It’s now been confirmed that the Mayorga fight will not go ahead.  Murilo ‘Ninja’ Rua Vs David Heath will now serve as the main event.

Update 2: The event has now officially been canceled.  Read more here.
