The UFC’s new heavyweight champion Junior Dos Santos is set to undergo surgery in Brazil to repair the damaged miniscus in his left knee.

‘Cigano’ is booked in to have the operation today, but could be back in training within 20-30 days according to a report from Portal Do Vale Tudo.

After his quick KO victory against Cain Velasquez at UFC On FOX 1 the fighter revealed that he had damaged his knee in training and had barely been able to walk just 10 days before the fight.

As a result he ramped down his training significantly and after going to the doctor’s for medication to ease the pain Dos Santos made the decision to fight anyway, a gamble that ended up paying off for him.

Speaking directly after the fight Dos Santos had expressed hopes that he would be able to avoid surgery, but that the final decision would come down to his doctor after having more tests.

At this stage it’s not clear when Cigano will fight next, but we do know that when he does he will be facing the winner of December 30th’s Brock Lesnar Vs Alistair Overeem fight which headlines the UFC 141 event in Las Vegas.
