With Gabe Gonzaga having been forced to pull out of his bout at UFC 108 on January 2nd, heavyweight contender Junior Dos Santos has been left without an opponent. Due to the promotions increasingly lengthy casualty list it a new bout has yet to be arranged for the up and coming Brazilian prospect, who holds a professional MMA record of 9-1.
“I’m waiting an UFC proposal,” Dos Santos told Brazilian site Tatame, “but probably they will put someone else on his (Gonzaga’s) place. As the most of the heavyweights are sick or have scheduled fights, there are few fighters to put, but I believe that they will find someone. (laughs)“
While Dos Santos admits he will “fight anyone,” he does have a particular preference for his next opponent.
“There are some new guys on the UFC, but we hope that they match with someone more known on UFC.“
That is likely to be the major stumbling block however. Two possible established opponents he could face – Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira and Cain Velasquez are rumored to be fighting at either the UFC 109 or UFC 110 card in February, while top contender Shane Carwin is also sidelined until after the January event.
If the UFC does wish to keep Dos Santos on the UFC 108 card then I stick by a suggestion I made last week, that he could face Ben Rothwell. It may not be the established UFC fighter that Dos Santos would hope for, but under the circumstances it would provide another experienced fighter for him to test his skills against.
Whoever he ends up facing, it’s unlikely that Dos Santos will complain.
“I have one month to the fight and whoever it is, I prefer to fight,“ he states.
