An announcement today revealed that FEG have sold kickboxing’s most revered promotion K-1 to Japanese real estate firm Barbizon Co. Ltd.
The deal sees the company take over major events like the K-1 World Grand-Prix and the end of year Dynamite!! show, but it does not include K-1 MAX and FEG’s MMA venture DREAM.
This is undoubtedly major news, but it does not come as a big surprise as FEG were known to be struggling financially for some time and there had been widespread reports of fighters, including last year’s K-1 heavyweight GP winner Alistair Overeem, not being paid.
At the present time it’s unclear how Barbizon will look to proceed now that the promotion has been taken under their wing, but hopefully the future will now be a little more stable for one of combat sports greatest treasures.
