An intriguing and altogether unexpected fight between ex-UFC fighter Keith Jardine and Gegard Mousasi is now on course for next weekend’s Strikeforce: Diaz Vs Daley Fight card.
The match-up came about after Mousasi’s original opponent Mike Kyle suffered a broken hand in training earlier in the week and had to pull out of the fight.
It could have proven difficult for Strikeforce to find a replacement at short notice, but it seems that the fact that UFC’s parent company recently purchased the organization has worked to their advantage.
Since leaving the UFC Jardine had made it clear that he harbored a hope of returning to the UFC someday, and that meant that he was deliberately avoiding signing with their biggest rival, Strikeforce. Now that Zuffa owns both companies it’s no longer an issue.
It’s a golden opportunity for ‘The Dean Of Mean’ to get back into the spotlight, though taking on a fighter like Mousasi on a weeks notice is an extremely tough proposition.
Simply comparing their recent records shows that, with Jardine currently on a two fight winning streak, but having lost five in a row prior to that. Meanwhile Mousasi has lost just once in his last eighteen fights.
The event airs live on Showtime on Saturday 9th April with a welterweight title fight between Nick Diaz and Paul Daley headlining the show.
