Former Strikeforce light-heavyweight champion Muhammad ‘King Mo’ Lawal headed to the kickboxing mecca of Holland to hone his stand-up skills this week, and he had barely stepped his foot off the plane when he suffered a rather unfortunate training injury.
In his first day sparring with talented K-1 fighter Tyrone Spong, King Mo made the mistake of turning up without his mouthguard.
His second mistake was asking Spong to go hard on him.
Another training partner Siyar Bahadurzada revealed on Twitter later that day what happened next.
“Today @KingMO_GDP didn’t have his mouth piece on while sparring and Tyrone Spong knocked 2 of his front teeth OUT!!!”
King Mo later confirmed the story on his own page.
“Hey guys, i’m alright. Ima go get my teeth fixed! It was not Tyrone’s fault, I asked him to go hard on me.”
Despite the injury, a few days later Lawal insists that the trip to Holland has been worth it.
“After 3 days of training…My power has already doubled!!! My kicks are better….my hands are a lil sore but its worth it!!”
As for his future plans, he still hopes to fight for Strikeforce in June, and then return to his Dutch camp in July for more work on his stand-up.
Note: It’s worth bearing in mind that King Mo is prone to a little mischief-making, so I wouldn’t be overly surprised if this turns out to be a hoax or has been exaggerated as a prank. Until we hear differently we’ll take him at face value though.
