It was a fun rumor while it lasted, but unfortunately it turns out that Chael Sonnen Vs Lyoto Machida will not be happening after all.

Sources close to the UFC revealed to MMAJunkie today that the fight had been under consideration, but only briefly, and in the end it was decided it was best that the two fighters were given different opponents.

Talk of the fight first came about on Saturday night when Sonnen called out Machida after UFC 132, claiming that he was willing to “make a stopover” at light-heavyweight on his way back to middleweight after a lengthy absence on the sidelines due to a steroid suspension.

Machida quickly responded that he would be up for that fight, and the FightersOnly site then claimed that verbal agreements were in place. unfortunately it appears that’s not the case.

The news leaves big question marks over who the two fighters will face instead. As Machida pointed out recently, the major contenders at 205lbs are all currently booked to fight which leaves him in limbo, while Sonnen has talked about needing a “tune up” and it’s not unclear whether that will be at light-heavyweight or middleweight.
