A middleweight showdown between Lyoto Machida and Luke Rockhold has been made official for UFC On FOX 15 in New Jersey on April 18th.
This fight had been rumored for some time with both Machida and Rockhold having previously indicated that is was a match-up they would be interested in.
Machida fought for the middleweight title earlier this year, losing out to current champion Chris Weidman by unanimous decision, though he did have his moments in the fight.
The Brazilian star remains one of the top 185lb’ers and served a reminder of that with a 62 second body kick KO of CB Dollaway in December which solidified his No.3 spot on the official UFC rankings.
Rockhold had a strong 2014, notching up three victories in a row against high level competition in Costas Philippou, Tim Boetsch and most recently Michael Bisping, with all three coming by stoppage inside the distance.
Rockhold, currently ranked No.5, could make a strong case for a title shot if he was able to defeat Machida, but it looks like he may have to bide his time as Vitor Belfort is next in line to fight Weidman at UFC 184 on February 28th, while Dana White confirmed earlier this week that Anderson Silva would face the winner if he gets past Nick Diaz at UFC 183 later this month.
