Word reaches us today that Nate Marquardt will indeed be making good on his intention to drop down to welterweight, and is now set to take on Anthony ‘Rumble’ Johnson at UFC On Versus 4 in June.

The match-up is somewhat ironic given that many people have stated their belief that Johnson should be moving up a weight class following a number of failures to make weight over the past few years.

To his credit though Johnson did make weight for his last encounter with Dan Hardy, and picked up a unanimous decision victory.

Meanwhile the prospect of Marquardt, who’s been one of the middleweight division’s top fighters for a number of years, dropping down to 170lbs brings a whole new lease of life to the division.

If he can navigate past Johnson then fights with other top contenders such as Jon Fitch, BJ Penn and Jake Shields to name but a few will all attract significant interest, while Marquardt has also stopped short of ruling out a potential fight with current welterweight champion Georges St.Pierre despite the fact that they are training partners.

As yet no headline bout has been announced for the June 26th event, but Marquardt Vs Johnson certainly sounds like a strong contender for that spot.
