Matt Hamill Wins Despite Broken Hand, Eye-Poke And Staph

In the TUF 11 finale post-fight press conference the victorious Matt Hamill revealed that he had fought through a broken hand and also confirmed he had a staph infection.

“It just happened so fast and I just go all out with my hands. I don’t know what happened. I just fought my heart out. It happened in the 1st round. I knew something was wrong with my hand.

“I lost my power and I was trying to go for a takedown. When I grabbed his leg, I had no power to grip… It looked like the Hulk,” he joked.

Having to fight with a broken hand was bad enough, but in the second round he had to deal with another unintentional injury.

“…then he poked me in the eye. I thought I was going to be blind and deaf. Enough Handicaps!” he joked, “But I could fight all night on the feet. Even though I’m not good at striking. But I’m glad I came and fought.”

The fighter also confirmed that as a result of the eye-poke he had blurred vision during the fight.

It was evident during the bout that Hamill had some kind of an infection on his back, and when asked about it Hamill sheepishly admitted that he had just learned what it was.

“I just found out I have a staph infection,” he said before adding, “I have to put on antibiotics tomorrow.”

The fact that he was medically cleared to fight despite having this highly infectious condition does not reflect well on the doctors at the event, especially as it could be clearly seen during the fighter weigh-ins the day before.

Despite the adversity he suffered during the fight Hamill picked up another win on his record, but he still feels he has something to prove to the fans.

“I just wanna be in the top ten fighters in the world. I just want to let people know that I am a great fighter. I want people to know that I belong in the UFC and I’m gonna do better next time. If you are not happy with the way I’m fighting, I’m sorry. I’ll come back again and do a lot better. I promise you that.”
