After an impressive first round victory over Ricardo Almeida at UFC 117 last month an elated Matt Hughes declared that he was now going to take the rest of the year off.
According to the latest post on his website however, he may now be having a change heart.
“Dana called me yesterday and we had an interesting conversation about the November 20th UFC in Detroit. More news about that down the road,” he states on matt-hughes.com.
November 20th is the date of UFC 123 which is headlined by Lyoto Machida Vs Quinton ‘Rampage’ Jackson.
Coincidentally it’s the same event that former lightweight champion BJ Penn announced that he will be fighting on last week against an as yet un-named opponent.
Is it too much of a stretch to think that the two may be set to meet for a third time at the event?
I think it’s certainly a possibility. As I mentioned last week after Penn’s announcement, it’s not immediately obvious who the Hawaiian would face at 155lbs in November given that many of the top contenders already have fights scheduled.
Prior to his rematch with Frankie Edgar Penn had refused to rule out a return to welterweight, and with the two fighters currently 1-1 against each other, a chance to settle the score once and for all could be appealing to both men.
At this stage it’s all just speculation, but either way it looks like we will have both former champions on the main card on what’s shaping up to be another major event for the promotion.
