The main card opener of UFC 119 between Melvin Guillard and Jeremy Stephens promised to be a barn burner but on the night it proved to be a more cautious fight than that.

It started out promisingly as Stephens clipped Guillard early in the first, sending him briefly to the canvas, but he sprung back up apparently unhurt.

The fight then took an unexpected turn as Guillard chose to fight from the outside, avoiding his opponents power strikes while using his speed to spring in with point scoring strikes.

The strategy didn’t please the crowd due to a lack of real action, but it was somewhat effective and appeared to frustrate Stephens who clearly wanted to slug it out.

Not much changed in the later rounds with Stephens struggling to close the distance while Guillard never really stepped up the action and the fight ended with a chorus of boo’s from the Indianapolis fans.

It was a tough fight to score but Guillard got the nod by split decision to go three fights unbeaten in the UFC.
