After his win over Brian Stann at UFC 136 on Saturday night Chael Sonnen stepped into pole position to fight Anderson Silva for the middleweight title next, with Dana White later commenting that he’d be “stupid’ not too.
While many people are looking forward to the rematch, one man who’s less than enthused by the idea is another of the top 185lb contenders in the UFC, Michael Bisping who believes he deserves his chance first.
“Chael Sonnen had his chance, put on a great performance but lost. Got tapped out, got finished, and then after that he failed a steroids test. As far as I can see he had his chance and he blew it,” Bisping tells FightersOnly.
“I feel I deserve a shot. I have got to beat [Jason] Miller, he is tough, I am not looking past him. [But] its me, I’m the contender. Belfort has just been beat, Yushin Okami has just been beat, Sonnen got beat. What are they going to do, all they all going to keep beating each other up and then having another shot at him?”
Bisping is certainly “in the mix” as Dana White likes to say and a win over Jason ‘Mayhem’ Miller to add to his current three fight winning streak would put him in a strong position in the division, but there’s no doubt that there’s far more heat surrounding a second showdown between Silva and Sonnen that the UFC would be foolish not to capitalize on.
The other problem for Bisping is that despite having produced a strong 11-3 record in the UFC people struggle to believe that he has a legimate chance of doing what everyone else in the UFC has so far failed to do – defeat ‘The Spider’.
However, if he can keep winning then he’s going to be hard to ignore and his wish to fight the champion may finally come true in 2012.
