Jonathan Brookins has been crowned the 12th winner of The Ultimate Fighter reality show after defeating Michael Johnson by unanimous decision tonight in Las Vegas.

Johnson started strongly, stuffing Brookins takedown attempts and showing markedly better stand-up than his opponent. Brookins was leaving his chin out in the open and Johnson was more than happy to tag it with heavy shots throughout the round.

Brookins needed something to change in the second if he was to get something out of this fight, and that’s exactly what happened when he finally secured an early takedown. From there he showed a mixture of good control and solid ground and pound to pull himself right back into the fight.

With the momentum now on his side Brookins again looked to take the fight to the mat in the third, and again was successful, with Johnson beginning to look tired and out of ideas on his back. He did briefly manage to scramble back up mid-way through the round only to fall victim to Brookins trademark lateral drop and find himself back where he started until the round came to a close.

It was a real show of heart, grit and determination from Brookins to turn the fight around after a bad first round, and he deservedly was awarded a unanimous decision victory and became the 12th winner of The Ultimate Fighter as a result.

There’s no doubt Brookins has potential, but tonight’s fight showed he has a lot of room for improvement, particularly with his stand-up which shows some glaring weaknesses.
