Though much of the hype surrounding Saturday nights Strikeforce event on CBS is focused on Fedor Emelianenko and Brett Rogers fight, another of the promotions stars will also be in action.
Gegard Mousasi made an instant impact in his strikeforce debut, defeating Renato Sobral in just 60 seconds to claim the Strikeforce Light Heavyweight Championship. Now he faces Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou who he was originally scheduled to fight at DREAM’s Super Hulk tournament earlier this year, before pulling out due to injury.
Interestingly Strikeforce have deemed this a non-title fight, perhaps due to Sokoudjou’s inconsistent form of late which includes a loss to the aforementioned Renato Sobral.
When asked by mma.fanhouse reporter Ariel Helwani how he felt about not being able to defend his title, Mousasi appeared not to be disappointed at all, and in fact views it in a positive light.
“I don’t like to be the champion who defends his title every time,” he confesses before adding, “I like more the underdog position…I don’t like being the champion…I like the title!”
“It’s a better position for me (to be the underdog). Less pressure and no expectations, so that’s much better, because now people have big expectations (of me).”
