Nate Diaz and Gray Maynard are set to fight in the main event at Ultimate Fight Night 20 on January 11th graciefighter.com has announced.
It will not be the first time the two lightweights will have fought each other however, as they previously squared off in the cage in the semi-finals of The Ultimate Fighter Season 5. On that occasion Diaz came out on top, locking on a guillotine choke in the second round. Diaz would then go on to win the show outright.
Since then both fighters have made a significant impression on the UFC’s lightweight division. Gray Maynard (8-0-1NC) is currently on a six fight unbeaten run, defeating Frankie Edgar, Jim Miller and Roger Huerta along the way, and has been suggested as a possible title contender if his current form continues.
Meanwhile Nate Diaz (11-4) started off strongly in the UFC after beating Manny Gamburian in the TUF finale, registering a further four wins before losing two decisions in a row to Clay Guida and Joe Stevenson. He bounced back in his last fight however, claiming a second round submission victory over Melvin Guillard.
For Maynard the fight sees both the opportunity for revenge, and the chance to claim another significant win that will boost his title hopes. For Diaz a win over Maynard at this stage would be more notable than his previous win over the wrestler considering his current run of form, and would signify that he is again ready to push for a top contender spot himself.
