The UFC PR machine has certainly hit the ground running this year. We’re still only in the first few weeks of January, yet they’ve already released a pre-fight promo interview with light-heavyweight champion Mauricio ‘Shogun’ Rua for his March 19th title fight with Rashad Evans at UFC 128.

It’s a smart move by the promotion though, as it gives us a chance to see with our own eyes that Shogun is indeed healthy after major knee surgery, and is on course to defend his title as planned, despite worries late last year that his return to the octagon may be delayed.

“I’m good, I’m 100%. Today is six months since my surgery, and I feel good,” Shogun says with a broad smile at the start of the promo.

In his interviews since winning the title from Lyoto Machida last year you get a sense that Rashad Evans wouldn’t have been his first choice to fight against – he’s been vocal about his desire to fight Randy Couture who he describes as a “legend” – but nonetheless he is respectful towards him.

“Rashad is a good fighter. He’s a top fighter in the light-heavyweight [division] and I respect him, he is my next fight, but I train hard for every fighter.”

While he stops short of predicting the outcome of the fight, the champion does give one guarantee to his many supporters.

“My promise to my fans is to fight 100%. I promise to give my fans a good show every time I fight.”
