I’ll admit that for some time I’ve been working under the assumption that Gina Carano’s acting ambitions would rule out a return to mixed martial arts, but for the first time since she lost to Cris ‘Cyborg’ Santos back in the summer of 2009, there’s evidence that she might still be plotting a comeback.

In a blog post on the X-Treme Couture website today it was revealed that Carano is now back in training.

“Xtreme Couture would like to welcome back Gina Carano.

Gina spent the morning training with Gil Martinez, here are a couple of shots from todays practice.

We expect to see a lot more of Gina here training in 2011.”

This might be as much of a surprise to the gym as anybody else.  Last year when Randy Couture, who cornered Carano for her last fight, was asked if he thought she would return to the sport, he said he didn’t think so.

Of course simply turning up at the gym doesn’t necessarily mean she’s going to fight again, but if that is the case it will be a huge boost for Strikeforce.

Carano’s fight with Cyborg still holds the record for the highest viewing figures they’ve had on Showtime, and with the promotion already shaping up for their biggest year yet in 2011, Carano’s return would be the icing on the cake.

Even if she is intending to step back into the cage it’s unlikely she’ll be fighting again in the very near future.  First things first there’s the promotion for her first starring role in a movie, Steven Soderbergh’s, ‘Haywire’, to be undertaken.  The movie is expected to be released in movie theaters on April 22nd.

Here’s the photographic evidence to prove she is back in training…
