Anticipation is building for a potential Strikeforce tournament to crown a new middleweight champion should Jake Shields decide to leave for the UFC as is widely predicted.
The latest name mentioned by Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker as a possible fighter in the eight-man competition is current welterweight champion Nick Diaz according to MMAJunkie. He would undoubtedly be an exciting addition to the mix alongside the likes of Dan Henderson, ‘Jacare’ Souza and Jason ‘Mayhem’ Miller.
Here is a full list of the fighters earmarked for the tournament so far.
- Dan Henderson
- Nick Diaz
- Ronaldo ‘Jacare’ Souza
- Jason ‘Mayhem’ Miller
- Robbie Lawler
- Tim Kennedy
- Cung Le / Scott Smith [winner of]
- Kazuo Misaki / Jorge Santiago [winner of]
Personally I’m excited about the possibility of this going ahead. It would be a great way to generate interest in the promotion, and the winner of such a well contested tournament would be a deserving champion. There’s the potential for some mouth-watering ties along the way so hopefully Coker and Co. make this official before too long.
