It’s official, Nick Diaz tested positive for marijuana metabolites following his fight with Carlos Condit at UFC 143 last weekend.
Nevada State Athletic Commission Executive Director Keith Keizer confirmed the news today, putting to rest rampant speculation about the situation over the past few days.
It had quickly become clear this week that something was amiss when Dana White announced that a rematch between Diaz and Condit was in the works, only for the fight to almost immediately be scrapped due to an “issue” in the Diaz camp.
When Diaz manager Cesar Gracie then indicated that his fighter would have gladly accepted the rematch while also claiming that he wasn’t allowed to reveal the real reason the fight wouldn’t be taking place people began to put two and two together, and everybody’s worst fears have now been confirmed.
This is not the first time Diaz has tested positive for marijuana, having also served a six month suspension back in February of 2007 after failing a post-fight drugs test at PRIDE 33.
Diaz is now certain to face at least another six month ban (a year is probably more likely given that it’s a second offense) which will take him completely out of the welterweight picture while Condit is now more than likely going to face Georges St.Pierre before the year is over.
The question now is whether Dana White will stand by the 28 year-old, or if his continued failure to “play the game” as the UFC president calls it, will see him being ejected from the roster.
